Back To Reality

Our little mini-vacation escape to Kansas City went all too quickly.  It was some much needed alone time for the two of us to get away and pretend like we do not have a care in the world.  We ate some amazing food, played all day in the water park, and I found my dream job calling and it has lots of “perks!”

Let me start with my favorite part of the trip and the whole reason we went back to KC!

Remember this beer from our anniversary trip and tour of the Boulevard plant?

This is the beer that started it all!  We arrived early to the tour and asked where we could grab a cup of coffee.  They referred us to The Roasterie which was just up the block.  When we got there we found out they had tours of their roasting facility that they do every Saturday morning.  The unfortunate part of the whole thing was that we were leaving on Friday and would not be able to make the Saturday morning tour.  Problem fixed, we went back to KC with doing this tour in mind!

Outside the building in the sweltering heat

The tour consisted of Paul, their bean hunter, talking about the origins, regions, and sourcing of coffee.  He had some slides of the locations of where they source their beans along with some great stories.  He may have already had a few too many cups of coffee:)  After the slides we went into their cupping room.

Paul pouring perfectly heated water onto the coffee grounds

Yep, pretty sure that is coffee I smell:)

Slurp!

In order to cup coffee you have to taste it while it is still really hot.  This is one place where making a loud slurping noise is welcomed!

That is a lot of beans!

Some inventory...most is kept temperature controlled in Cali

Some packaged product along with one roaster

While we were milling about post tour waiting to buy some tasty coffee we got to sample one of the Paul’s new creations!

That would be coffee ice cream (could we combine more of my favorites?)

This is the face of what amazing tastes like! Oh ice cream how I love thee!

The Roasterie is playing around with some recipes, etc to perfect their coffee float creation.  My suggestion was to pour espresso over the top.  Any way you scoop it I thought that it had amazing flavor and the texture was the best part with little bits of coffee beans.

I thoroughly enjoyed my morning touring the plant, learning about coffee, and imagining myself in my dream job!  It brought back a lot of memories of my favorite job, being a barista!  Thanks to the group at The Roasterie for making my geeky little dream come true!  If you are in KC, or if you need a reason to go, visit the folks at The Roasterie!  It is a great way to start your day or build a vacation around:)

Tomorrow I will post about all of the amazing food that we enjoyed.  I know how much Kevin loves me when in one day we went to a coffee roasting plant, ate at a salad and soup bar joint for lunch, and had dinner at a vegetarian restaurant.  It could have quite possibly been one of my top 10 days of my life!

Hope your week is starting off great!
